Seraphim
From Urantia Wiki, the encyclopedia of The Urantia Book
Seraphim are the angels of the local universe in The Urantia Book. Together with their assistants, the cherubim and sanobim, they make up “the angelic corps of a local universe” 38:0.2. The book calls them “the traditional angels of heaven,” “the ministering spirits who live so near you and do so much for you” 113:0.2, and it restricts the word angel in its main treatment to the seraphim and their associates who serve the plan of mortal survival 38:3.1. Seraphim are the guardian angels of human beings 113:0.1, the transport carriers between worlds 39:2.8, and the chief agents of Urantia’s unseen planetary government 114:0.1.
Origin and nature
Seraphim are created by the Universe Mother Spirit. They come into being “in unit formation—41,472 at a time,” a process that began with the “pattern angels” of early Nebadon 38:1.1. Because Nebadon is still growing, new seraphim are still being created 38:1.3.
Angels do not have material bodies, but they are definite and discrete beings; they are of spirit nature and origin. Though invisible to mortals, they perceive you as you are in the flesh without the aid of transformers or translators.38:2.1
According to the book, angels understand mortal life and share man’s nonsensuous emotions. They “greatly enjoy your efforts in music, art, and real humor” 38:2.1. The one human emotion they find hard to understand is “the legacy of animal fear” 113:2.5. In nature they are “just a trifle ahead of mortal races,” and after death mortals become “very much like them” 38:2.6. In the words the book gives Jesus, the loyal angels are immortal unless they become involved in sin, and they are “neither all-wise nor all-powerful” 167:7.3.
Seraphim are not sexual beings. The book quotes Jesus’ saying that those who rise “neither marry nor are given in marriage” but are “equal to the angels” 38:2.2 Mt 22:30; Lk 20:35-36. Because they are “children of the Spirit,” the book calls them “daughters of God” and usually refers to an individual seraphim as she 38:2.2. Seraphim live and work in pairs. They are not male and female but “negative and positive,” partners “exceedingly personal and truly affectionate” 38:4.2-3.
Angels “are not your judges or accusers” 38:2.4, nor objects of worship: when John the Revelator fell at an angel’s feet, the seraphim Loyalatia told him, “See that you do it not; I am a fellow servant with you” 38:2.5 Rev 19:10; Rev 22:8-9.
Training and organization
The home worlds of the seraphim are the ninth group of seven spheres in the Salvington circuit. There “each seraphim has a real home,” shared by a pair 38:4.1-2. After two millennia of training on Salvington and the seraphic worlds, and service as observers on the lowest evolutionary worlds, they are commissioned as ministering spirits of time on a system’s architectural worlds 38:5.1-3.
Seraphim are organized in multiples of twelve: groups of 12 pairs, companies, battalions, units of 20,736 pairs, and legions of 248,832 pairs, a figure the book connects with Jesus’ words about “more than twelve legions of angels” 38:6.1 Mt 26:53. Twelve legions form a host, commanded by an archangel, and twelve hosts an angelic army, directed by the Brilliant Evening Stars or other lieutenants of Gabriel 38:6.2.
The seven orders
Seraphim are created alike, but in training they sort themselves into seven orders 39:0.1-8. No order is inferior to another, and a seraphim can work her way through all seven services. The book’s seraphic co-author, Manotia, began as a supreme seraphim and achieved all seven 39:0.9.
1. Supreme seraphim are the highest of the seven; their first group serves the high Sons and Spirits of the local universe 39:1.1-2. Their groups include the court advisers, the universe orientators, the teaching counselors, and the bestowal attendants who accompany a Paradise Son on a bestowal mission 39:1.4 39:1.7 39:1.10 39:1.13. 2. Superior seraphim are “in charge of the higher activities of a local universe” 39:2.1. They include the intelligence corps, the Voice of Mercy, and the transporters based on Salvington 39:2.3 39:2.5 39:2.8. 3. Supervisor seraphim serve the constellations. Among them are the law forecasters, the social architects and the ethical sensitizers 39:3.1 39:3.3-4 39:3.7. 4. Administrator seraphim serve the local systems. Their groups include the justice guides and the quickeners of morality 39:4.1 39:4.4 39:4.10. 5. Planetary helpers serve the Planetary Adams, the Material Sons sent to evolutionary worlds. They include the “voices of the Garden” and the souls of peace 39:5.1 39:5.3 39:5.5. Most of them were withdrawn from Urantia when the Adamic regime collapsed 39:5.2. 6. Transition ministers help creatures pass from material to spiritual life, chiefly by teaching on the mansion worlds 39:6.1-8. 7. Seraphim of the future are held largely in reserve for the age of light and life. The book withholds a description of their work because they have no direct concern with Urantia 39:7.1-2.
Each of the seven orders has its own transporters, recorders and reserves 39:2.8 39:2.14 39:2.17.
Guardian angels
The teaching about guardian angels is not a myth; certain groups of human beings do actually have personal angels.113:1.1
The book ties this teaching to Jesus’ words about the little ones whose “angels do always behold the presence” of the Father 113:1.1 Mt 18:10. How many guardians a person has depends on spiritual progress through the seven “circles” of human attainment. A mortal in the seventh, initial circle shares one guardian angel and a company of cherubim with a thousand others; the groups get smaller in each circle 113:1.6-7. On reaching the third circle a mortal receives a personal angel, “in reality two” 113:1.8. From that point, or after a supreme decision to become Godlike, or on enrollment in the reserve corps of destiny, the angel becomes a guardian of destiny 113:2.1. The first human on Urantia to have one, the book says, was Rantowoc, “a wise man of the red race of long ago” 113:2.2.
Guardians always volunteer and serve their subject for life; one of the pair acts as the “recording angel” 113:2.7 113:2.9. At death the guardian keeps the soul’s records and identity in trust 113:6.1. In the resurrection halls of the mansion worlds, “The Adjuster will identify you; the guardian seraphim will repersonalize you” 113:6.6. On the mansion worlds mortals see their angels for the first time 113:7.1.
Transport and the “wings”
Mortals cannot travel between worlds under their own power until they reach Paradise, so they depend on seraphic transport 39:2.10. Being enseraphimed is “not unlike the experience of death or sleep”: the traveler sleeps and wakes at the destination unaware of the time that has passed 39:2.11-12. Seraphim cannot carry flesh-and-blood bodies, but they can carry everything from the lowest morontia forms upward 39:2.13. On Jerusem, transports leave from Mount Seraph at the rate of one every three seconds 46:2.8.
The book explains the traditional image of angels in two ways. First, at the moment before death a dimming mind may glimpse its attending angel and picture it in the angel form it already imagines 39:5.11. Second, and more specifically, the idea of wings came from what people saw of seraphim being prepared for transport:
In observing a transport seraphim being made ready to receive a passenger for interplanetary transit, there may be seen what are apparently double sets of wings extending from the head to the foot of the angel. In reality these wings are energy insulators—friction shields.39:5.12
The book describes the loading in detail. The transport seraphim lies horizontally above the planet’s energy pole. The sleeping passenger is laid on top of her, and “both the upper and lower pairs of shields are carefully closed” 39:5.13. Then she “grows pointed at both extremities” and becomes wrapped in “a queer light of amber hue.” By departure she is “an almost transparent, vibrating, torpedo-shaped outline of glistening luminosity,” which shoots away “with lightninglike speed, leaving a trail of celestial luminosity” 39:5.14. The book’s footnotes connect the wings to the winged seraphim of Isaiah and the cherubim of Ezekiel, and the luminous departure to Ezekiel’s visions 39:5.12 39:5.14 Is 6:2; Ezk 1:4-14; Ezk 10:5.
Seraphim and Urantia
The book says that “The Most Highs rule in the kingdoms of men through many celestial forces and agencies but chiefly through the ministry of seraphim” 114:0.1 Dn 4:17. Its author, the chief of seraphim on Urantia, reports a noon roll call of 501,234,619 pairs of seraphim on the planet 114:0.2. Since Pentecost, twelve corps of master seraphim of planetary supervision have served under the resident governor general 114:6.1.
In the Lucifer rebellion the head of the seraphic hosts on Jerusem joined Lucifer, and many of the system administrator seraphim followed him 53:6.2. Manotia, the second in command, refused to join and took command of the loyal angelic hosts of Jerusem 53:6.1 53:6.3-4. The book applies to these rebels the verse about “the angels who kept not their first estate” 53:1.6 Jud 1:6. At the birth of Jesus, “the seraphim of Urantia, assembled under their directors, did sing anthems of glory over the Bethlehem manger,” though, unlike the heavenly host in Luke, they were “not heard by human ears” 122:8.5 Lk 2:13-15. In his fourth bestowal, Michael of Nebadon himself lived for over forty standard years as a seraphim, serving as a teaching counselor on twenty-two worlds 119:4.1-3.
Destiny
Angels, unlike mortals, are “not absolutely sure of their eternal future until they have attained Seraphington,” their destiny sphere. No seraphim who has reached it has ever gone astray 39:8.9. Some become Brilliant Evening Stars 39:8.1; others reach Paradise as Celestial Recorders, Technical Advisers or Paradise Companions 39:8.3. Guardians of destiny often rejoin their mortal wards on Paradise and may enter the Mortal Finaliter Corps. Many others join the Corps of Seraphic Completion 39:8.10.
