Adam
From Urantia Wiki, the encyclopedia of The Urantia Book
Adam is, in The Urantia Book, the Material Son who came with his mate Eve from Jerusem to Urantia as its biologic uplifter, arriving 37,848 years before A.D. 1934 74:0.1. The book describes him not as the first human being but as a visitor sent to improve an already ancient human race, and it calls the pair the founders of the violet race, the ninth human race to appear on the planet 76:4.1.
The book's account runs across Papers 73 to 76, all presented by Solonia, the seraph it identifies as "the voice in the Garden" 73:7.5. It covers the pair's preparation, the 117 years of their rule in the Garden of Eden, their default, their life as mortals in the second garden, and their survival 74:8.14.
Origin and selection
According to Paper 51, every Material Son sent to a world as a biologic uplifter carries the name Adam, after the original Material Son of Satania 51:0.1. The Urantia pair belonged to the senior corps of Material Sons on Jerusem, jointly numbered 14,311; they were of the third physical series and "a little more than eight feet in height" 74:1.1. For more than fifteen thousand years they had directed a division of experimental energy applied to the modification of living forms, and before that they had taught in the citizenship schools of Jerusem 74:1.2.
When volunteers were called for the Urantia mission, the whole senior corps offered itself, and the Melchizedek examiners, with the approval of Lanaforge and the Most Highs of Edentia, chose this pair 74:1.3. They had stayed loyal during the Lucifer rebellion, and they were placed under oath to the Most Highs and to Michael and told to regard themselves as subject to the Melchizedek receivers of Urantia 74:1.4. They left behind one hundred children, fifty sons and fifty daughters 74:1.5.
The mission was requested almost forty thousand years ago by the Life Carriers and the Melchizedek receivers, who judged that the races were nearing their biological peak 73:0.1. Tabamantia inspected the planet and recommended the sending of Material Sons; Adam and Eve arrived a little less than a hundred years later 73:0.3.
Arrival and rule
The pair arrived at noon in the Garden, by seraphic transport, and were rematerialized in human form over ten days within the temple of the Universal Father 74:0.1. On waking they were greeted by Van and Amadon, the loyalists of the earlier Caligastia secession, and Adam addressed Amadon in his own Andonic dialect, which he had learned on Jerusem 74:2.1-2. The senior Melchizedek handed over planetary custody, Van gave up the titular authority he had held for more than 150,000 years, and Gabriel announced the second judgment roll call of Urantia, opening "the age of Adam, the third planetary epoch" 74:2.6-8.
The book narrates their first days in detail. On the sixth day Adam inspected the animal life of the planet, naming creatures by sight; his companions did not know that he was "one of the most expert anatomists of all Satania" 74:3.8. That night the Garden leaders resolved to worship the pair as gods, and on the seventh morning Adam told them that only the Father may be worshiped: he "would accept any honor and receive all respect, but worship never!" 74:4.3-4. The book gives this as the origin of the Sabbath tradition 74:4.6.
After almost seven years the Melchizedek receivers left, despite Adam's requests that they stay 74:5.1-2. Adam fostered manufacture and trade, and tried to build a world government, but outside the Garden he met the resistance of Caligastia and Daligastia, who though deposed had not been removed from the planet 74:5.3-5. He fell back on Van's system of companies of a hundred and established almost one hundred outlying trade and social centers 74:5.6-7. The book credits him with teaching sex equality, and says the sending of ambassadors between tribes dates from his time 74:7.22 74:5.8.
Family
Adamson was the first-born of the violet race 74:6.2. Eve bore sixty-three children before the default, and when the pair left the Garden their family numbered 1,647 pure-line descendants in four generations 74:6.2. Adam and Eve took "light and energy" from space emanations together with the fruit of the tree of life, and their bodies gave off a shimmer of light, which the book names as the origin of the halo in religious art 74:6.4-5.
Default
After more than a hundred years Adam saw little progress outside the Garden 75:0.1. The book judges that the pair "would have sometime met with success had they been more farseeing and patient," and calls both, "especially Eve," too impatient 75:1.6. Caligastia, unable to move Adam, turned to Eve through the Nodites 75:2.3. Serapatatia, an honest Nodite leader, proposed that a child of part violet descent be born to the Nodites to bind them to the Garden, and after more than five years Eve met secretly with Cano and consented to the plan 75:3.5-9.
Adam, learning what had happened, chose to share Eve's fate: the next day he sought out Laotta, head of the western schools, and "with premeditation committed the folly of Eve" 75:5.2. The book stresses that "Adam was not beguiled; he knew exactly what he was about" 75:5.2. Adam then wandered alone for thirty days 75:5.5. Seventy days after the default the Melchizedek receivers returned, "and then he knew they had failed" 75:5.8.
With a Nodite army marching on the Garden, Adam led about twelve hundred followers out of Eden rather than fight 75:6.2. On the third day of the journey Gabriel pronounced the verdict: the pair were in default, though absolved of "contempt of the universe government," and were reduced to mortal status 75:7.1-3. Their children who had reached twenty were offered a choice, and two thirds of them, together with all the younger children, were taken to Edentia 75:6.3.
Second garden and death
The caravan took almost a year to reach the Euphrates and settled between the rivers in what became the second garden 76:1.1-2. Cain, son of Eve and Cano, and Sansa, daughter of Adam and Laotta, were born on the way 76:0.2. Abel was born in the second garden and later killed by Cain, who left for the land of Nod 76:2.1-9. Seth, born 129 years after Adam's arrival, founded the Sethite priesthood 76:3.4.
Adam spent most of his remaining time training his children in administration, education and religion 76:3.2. Before he died, a commission headed by Eve brought 1,570 children of the Adamic life plasm into the world through 1,682 selected women, the beginnings of the Andite race 76:4.8. After their reduction to mortal status, the pair received Thought Adjusters 76:5.2. Adam received a personal message from Michael promising that he would be called from mortal sleep "when I come to Urantia" if not before 76:5.3.
Adam lived for 530 years; he died of what might be termed old age.76:5.5
Eve had died nineteen years earlier, and both were buried in the center of their temple 76:5.5. On the third day after Adam's death, Gabriel conducted a special resurrection in which Adam and Eve and 1,316 of their associates were repersonalized on the mansion worlds 76:6.2. They rose to Jerusem again, "this time as members of a different order," and now serve among the four and twenty counselors 76:6.3.
Assessment in the book
The book denies that there was a "fall of man": Adam and Eve fell from material sonship to mortal status, but the human race "has been uplifted despite the immediate consequences of the Adamic default" 75:8.1-2. It says Adam "should not be regarded as the cause of a curse on the human race" 75:8.3. It also says "there probably never was a more disheartening miscarriage of wisdom on any planet in all Nebadon" 75:8.6, and closes the story as one "of trial, tragedy, and triumph" 76:6.4.
Adam and the Bible
The book presents Genesis as a late, reworked memory of these events and departs from it on several points:
- First man. Genesis makes Adam the first human Gn 2:7. The book says the Jews assumed this because Moses traced Abraham's lineage back to Adam, and points to Cain's wife from the "land of Nod" as a trace of pre-Adamic peoples 74:8.8 74:8.10 Gn 4:16-17.
- Creation. The six days of creation, it says, grew from Adam's six days of inspecting the Garden, and the creation of Eve from a rib condenses memories of the arrival and of the earlier creation of bodies for Caligastia's staff 74:8.1-3 Gn 1:1-31; Gn 2:21-23.
- Naming the animals. Genesis's scene of Adam naming the creatures is matched by his tour of the animals on the sixth day 74:3.8 Gn 2:19-20.
- The serpent. In Genesis a serpent tempts Eve Gn 3:1-6; in the book the tempter is Caligastia working through sincere Nodites, and the "Lord God" who calls "Where are you?" was Solonia 75:3.3 75:4.8 Gn 3:8-9.
- Lifespan. Genesis gives Adam 930 years Gn 5:5; the book gives 530 76:5.5.
- The second Adam. The book adopts Paul's phrase, saying that Michael became the successor of Adam as "the second Adam" 93:10.7 1 Co 15:45-47.
